Wallpaper is perhaps one of my favorite design trends. It’s the perfect way to elevate a room and add instant color and texture.

It never really went out of style; however, it has had trouble shedding its reputation as old fashion and intimidatingly permanent. When thinking of wallpaper, most people imagine the dated, tacky patterns and colors that were in the kitchens of Grandmothers everywhere. However, this once decorating taboo has made a fast comeback and only continues to grow in popularity. Today’s designs are a vast improvement from your grandmother’s dated florals and has the ability to add tremendous personality and character to your space. Wallpaper is extremely versatile, and styles can range from elegant and traditional to eclectic and sophisticated. Wallpaper packs a big punch for a relatively small investment.

Here are a few of my favorite modern wallpaper applications:

1. Entryways & Stairwells

Using wallpaper in entryways and stairwells is a fun way to add visual interest. I personally love the pairing of this wallpaper with the leopard print stair runner.

2. Shelfs & Accent Ceilings

I love finding unique ways to use wallpaper such as on shelfs or on ceilings. When used in these locations wallpaper can serve as a great accent piece without becoming too overpowering.

3. Powder Rooms

Powder Rooms are a great place to experiment with wallpaper and try out your riskiest design ideas. It’s self-contained, so you don’t have to worry as much about a loud pattern clashing with other spaces. Because the door is often kept closed, it’s a chance to break the continuity of a first floor’s decor and do something that surprises upon entry. Additionally, the spaces may be closet size, but they have the potential to be transformed into dazzling little jewel boxes. Finally, there are none of the wallpaper concerns of a full bath, like damage from humidity and moisture from the bathtub and shower.

4. Chinoiserie

Chinoiserie is a timeless classic and it’s by far one of my favorite forms of wallpaper. Nothing says “look at me” more than a bold chinoiserie wallpaper. It is truly the statement piece in a room. It’s like having artwork adorn your walls! Chinoiserie, derives from the French word “chinois” or “Chinese”, and it is the European interpretation of Chinese and East Asian style. It first became very popular in the 18th century as trade between Asian countries and Europe grew. Chinoiserie, in its classical sense is very ornate, bold and filled with its fair share of color, pattern play, and curvy lines and details. The modern style represents a “toned down” chinoiserie. While there’s still a lot of color and pattern play going on, you also see this juxtaposed to modern furnishings and a simple aesthetic.
